Loretto, PA (02/10/2020) — Calling all thespians!
As Saint Francis University's Center for Fine Arts launches its new Professional Summer Theatre, area actors are encouraged to audition for it's inaugural show, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."
Auditions will be held Saturday, February 29 and Sunday, March 1 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the John F. Kennedy Student Center on the Loretto campus. All roles are open and paid.
The launch of the new Professional Summer Theatre at Saint Francis University is an effort to enhance and expand the fine arts on campus and in the surrounding community. The theatre company will give locals the chance to see professional productions that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to see.
Dr. Daniel Atwood, the director of the Center for Fine Arts, said that it is his hope that the overall expansion of the theatre at Saint Francis will lead to a theatre-specific minor and, eventually, even a new theatre major at the University.
"It's our hope that the Professional Summer Theatre brings more notoriety to the Center for Fine Arts, and raises awareness of, not just the summer theatre, but all the arts at SFU too," Dr. Atwood said.
He added that the professional theatre will give Saint Francis students, as well as community members, more opportunity to try new things both onstage and backstage, and the new experiences will give them a healthy resume to help them get more jobs in the future.
This year, the Professional Summer Theatre will produce and perform just one show, but Dr. Atwood said it is his goal to grow the company into one that will perform multiple shows in one summer season. The future addition of the anticipated Black Box Theatre on campus will give the acting company an extra space to perform as well.
The company's premiere performances of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" are set for June 18-21 and June 25-28 at 7:30 p.m. with additional Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. The show will be directed by Dr. Atwood.
As an educator, Dr. Atwood is a sought after leadership clinician having presented workshops at statewide music education conferences in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, and West Virginia. Dr. Atwood has also conducted several county and district band festivals in Pennsylvania.
In addition, Dr. Atwood has an extensive acting career including movie credits for "Sweet Girl" (Netflix), Seth Rogan's "An American Pickle," and "Roommates;" television credits for shows such as the Discovery Channel's "Manhunt: Lonewolf" and Cinemax's "Banshee;" as well as regional theatre credits for his roles in "White Christmas," "Miracle on 34th Street," "Every Christmas Story Ever Told," "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels: The Musical," "1776," "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged," "The Producers," "The Pirates of Penzance," and "Treasure Island."
